How to Escape Handcuffs : The Handcuff Shim
Knowing how to shim handcuffs is an incredibly useful skill if you ever find yourself put into a situation where you find yourself illegally restrained in a situation like a kidnapping, or similar situation. Though you may never need to know how to shim a pair of handcuffs, the knowledge and the escape gear to do it could be a lifesaver if you ever need to. Below are basic instructions on how to escape handcuffs.
Place your shim between the teeth of the handcuff and push in as far as it will go.
With pressure on the shim (pushing against the resistance you feel on the shim) gently tighten the handcuffs, allowing the shim to slip in between the teeth.
You’ll feel the shim slide further into the handcuff, now you can open the handcuffs, remember to keep pressure on the shim you don’t want to accidentally re-engage the handcuffs.
How to Escape Zip Ties
How to escape zip ties can be a lot easier than how to escape handcuffs. The locking blade of zip ties can be picked by sliding your handcuff shim into the zip tie’s lock, just like when shimming handcuffs to hold the locking blade up. This keeps it from contacting the strap’s teeth and allows you to back the strap out. A pocket clip broken off a pen or safety can make a usable shim to escape zip ties in a pinch. Picking the locking blade with a shim is the quietest and most low-key method for escaping from zip ties. If it’s thin enough and strong enough, the tag end of one of your binding zip ties can be inserted into the lock and used as a shim. In that case, the tool you need is right at your fingertips to escape zip ties. Alternatively you can use the saw attached to your escape and evasion dog tag, or use a friction saw like a shoelace.
